Xian is home to the Terracotta Warriors that guard the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang (as depicted in Zhang Yi Mou’s recent blockbuster Hero.) Twelve imperial dynasties ruled China from this western capital, which you will discover was as grand as Rome in its heyday. Starting point of the Silk Road, Xian still retains the romance of this famous desert route in its bustling markets, Wild Goose Pagoda, Chinese mosque and Muslim Quarter.
Day 1 Arrive Xian
On arrival this afternoon visit the city wall constructed in the early Ming Dynasty which has been preserved virtually intact to this day. An included bicycle or walking tour along the top of the city walls will give you a bird’s eye view of life on the streets in this ancient capital. This evening enjoy the Tang Dynasty cultural performance - provided by the Shaanxi Provincial Song and dance Troupe, whose performance is considered to be a national art.(D)
Day 2 Xian
Xian, the capital of the Shaanxi Province, captured the interest of the world in 1974 when peasants in the course of digging for wells, uncovered the astonishing 3rd century BC burial site of Emperor Qin Shi Huang - the first emperor of a unified China. Guarding this Imperial Tomb for over 2,000 years were thousands of life-sized terracotta warriors. The highlight of your stay in Xian is a visit to the site where these figures have been excavated; where excavation and restoration continues today.
After lunch at the Defachang Dumpling Restaurant visit the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, where you will see a rich collection of ancient artifacts. Later this afternoon learn the art of calligraphy in a visit to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda which was designed to house the Buddhist scriptures bought back from India. This evening take a stroll through the Muslim quarter and learn the art of tea tasting in one of the old Ming courtyard tea houses.(BL)
Day 3 Depart Xian
Transfer to the airport in time to board your onward flight as your great adventure draws to an end today.(B)
