8 days | US$3150 | Imperial Active in Myanmar

From the markets of Mandalay to Yangon’s lush tropical gardens and glittering temples relax into this site packed tour with a 2 day comfort-cruise on the Irrawady River, and a horse and cart tour along the pagoda dotted plains of Bagan - a rich insight into Myanmar.

Day 1-3 Yangon to Mandalay
Meet with your guide and enjoy a Burmese meal as you pick up tips on the country and how to get the best out of travel in Myanmar.

From Yangon fly to Mandalay, the cultural centre of the country and a colourful trade hub. Trains from the north roll into town bringing the traders of Kachin State and the southern Himalaya. Trucks and buses arriving from the East supply the markets with products and traders from the bountiful Shan plateau, whilst the famous Irrawaddy River that flows through Mandalay with its work and cruise boats provides the route west to the thousand pagodas of the Bagan plain.

Check out tribal wear from this melting pot of cultures in the buzzing Zegyo market. Visit the stunning Mahamuni Pagoda with its revered gold leaf Buddha, and walk the planks of U Bei, the world’s longest all-teak bridge.

Sunset over the Irrawaddy River back dropped by the Chin Hills from atop the hill is a moment of Mandalay magic.

Days 4 – 5 Irrawaddy Cruise
Cruise the Irrawaddy from Mandalay to Bagan on board the Pandaw 1947 synching yourself to the rhythms of this life giving river.

Villagers fishing the shallows with throw nets, bathing in the river, ploughing paddy with water buffalo are scenes little changed since described by writers of Burma’s colonial heyday, Kipling, Maugham and Greene.

You will visit Yandabo; a village specialize in Pot-Making, where the peace treaty of the First Anglo-Burmese war was signed in 1826. Sunset at Shwe Nann Tint, and a misty riverside sunrise just prior to docking are just two reasons for taking the leisurely river route to the spiritual centre of Bagan.

Day 5 - 6 Bagan
UNESCO listed Bagan is like no other place in the world. Two thousand temples from an original collection of four thousand stand as testament to the importance of Buddhism in Burma’s first unified.

A horse cart is the best speed and vantage point to view this ethereal landscape, study pagodas of all shapes and sizes. Your guide will interpret what you see and then facilitate your own further exploration, by cycle, hired vehicle or on simply by foot.

The evening light painted as a series of delicate silhouettes in receding layers is another of the many moments of pure Myanmar magic on this tour.

Days 7 – 8 Bagan to Yangon
Fly back to Yangon to the glittering gardened capital. Hear those temple bells tinkle* at the famous Shredagon Pagoda, the largest and most mythologised Buddhist Paya.

Wander the maze of supporting temples where Burmese folk from all over the nation pray for merit and immerse perform com to honour this sacred place.

Then move on to a little retail therapy. Yangon is famous for lacquer-wares, silks and woven sarongs all for truly bargain prices at the colourful Scott Market.
